Math League Champions!

On-Line Math League

Top 2nd Grade Class

What an amazing accomplishment...the students are SO excited!
Thank you, thank you for all you've done to support our learning here at school.

MAP Scores

 MAP Scores

What an impressive showing!

As a class, students moved from the 92nd percentile during the winter testing window to the

96th percentile
 for the spring testing window.

Overall, students typically grew 12 percentile points - this is OUTSTANDING!

House of Centimeters

For the past couple of weeks,
students have worked on measuring in standard units.

The students created their own yard and meters sticks in order to measure items found in our classroom.
We even placed 8 meter sticks together to illustrate creating the length of a school bus - the kids had a blast with this task!

For one of our measurement projects,
students constructed a "House of Centimeters."
Students measured the two dimensional parts (height and width)
of each item used to construct their house.

We are now working on comparing how items can be measured using two different units (inches and centimeters) and how these measurements compare.

Problem of the Day

Each day, we work on problem solving in our math notebooks.

We are currently working on measurement problems.

Here is today's problem:

Nathan is 4 feet 7 inches tall.
Mrs. Collins is 5 feet 2 inches tall.
How much taller is Mrs. Collins than Nathan?
EXPLAIN using words how you arrived at your answer.

This model had a FABULOUS representation through equation work.  Very impressive!

Wonderful job working together as a TEAM!!!

GREAT model here of using a different strategy!
I couldn't believe how many ways the students represented their thinking -
I always say "There's more than one way to solve a problem!"

SUPER partner work!
What a great way to solve the problem using a series of equations!

Practically PERFECT work...so pleased with their explanation!

This group has such a wonderful ENTHUSIASM for learning!
They also did a wonderful job of being very thorough in their thinking.

Here are two MATHEMATICIANS in the making!
Great work shown here.

Very ARTICULATE group!
I was impressed with their ability to demonstrate thinking.

Measurement Olympics

Students participated in the following Olympic events:

Cotton Ball Shot Put
Straw Javelin
Giant Step
Paper Plate Discus Throw
High Jump
Side Step

The learning goal was for students to explore the relationship between the measurement units of inches, feet, and yards.

Students created their own yardsticks, investigated the most efficient means of measurement, and discovered relationships among the units.

Skyler earns a "WOW" award for this thinking.
Students make the word "WOW" using their hands and faces...
they love receiving this award!!!

Problem Solving - OnLine Math League!

OnLine Math League

Students have just finished participating in our second OnLine Math League competition.  This competition includes 2nd grade students from across the county, state, and nation.  Each student takes a 15 question test within a 30 minute time constraint.  The tests are then scored and scores are entered on line.  Once the competition ends, classes are ranked based on scoring performance.

For our FIRST competition, we came in #1 in the county, #8 in the state, and #23 in the nation...WOW!!!!  The second test was incredibly difficult, but I am SO, SO proud of how the students worked within their time limit to solve problems.  Congratulations to AVA, who scored a 100%!!!!

The pictures show how students responded to being giving a practice test from the OnLine Math League website.  They solved problems on their whiteboards to practice for the test...they were SO excited about the challenge of the practice test!
